Obesity is a major
problem affecting most of our country today.

Let’s start with
the formal definition of obesity.
Obesity is defined as a condition characterized by the excessive
accumulation and storage of fat in the body (Merriam-Webster). This often results in significant impairment
of health.
Obesity is an
epidemic in this country. More than 58
million Americans are overweight, and this includes at least 1 in 5
children. Obesity is the second leading
cause of preventable death in the United States.
The are many health risks linked to obesity and being overweight. These include increased risk for coronary
artery disease, degenerative joint disease, type II diabetes mellitus,
hyperlipidemia, osteoarthritis, stroke, respiratory problems and liver and
gallbladder disease. Obesity also
increases your risk of certain cancers; colon, rectum and prostate in men and
uterus, biliary tract, breast and ovary in women.
So how can you
stay healthy and maintain an ideal weight?
Well, good health depends on the proper balance of an alkaline and acid
environment in our bodies. Disease loves
an acidic environment. Most diseases can
be traced back to an imbalance of pH in the body. To help maintain a healthy and balanced pH, you
should eat a diet that consists of 80% alkaline food and 20% acidic foods. Here are some examples of alkaline and acidic
foods.

- Vegetables : Asparagus, cauliflower, celery, cucumber, lettuce, onion, zucchini, beets, carrots, avocado, tomato
- Fruit : Lemon, lime, watermelon, grapefruit, mango
- Grain : Wild rice, quinoa
- Dairy : Soy cheese, soy milk, goat milk, goat cheese

- Vegetables : Potatoes, string beans, kidney beans, cooked spinach
- Fruit : Blueberry, cranberry, cherry, pineapple
- Meat : Beef, turkey, chicken, pork, lamb

- Beverages : Alcohol, soda, coffee
As with all diets,
this is not always so easy to follow. We
all have hectic schedules, “bad” days or just have a tough time restricting
certain food or drinks.
